Using Google Forms as a Reading Log

How many times have you heard, “I lost my reading log  or the dog ate it?” Perhaps these statements are on their way to becoming obsolete thanks to Google Forms. Using a Google Form as a reading log can simplify the process for both the teacher and student alike.

BENEFITS FOR TEACHER

  1. Teacher shares one link or embeds the form into a blog or classroom website
  2. All the information is propagated into a spreadsheet
    1. One sheet per student
    2. Tabs are labeled with students names
    3. Easier than flipping through a stack of papers
  3. Collects easily accessible data
  4. No need to collect reading logs during class time
  5. Reading logs are automatically time & date stamped
    1. ***This means the teacher will know when the student filled the form out
  6. Saves a Tree, and provides funds which can be spent on other academic supports

  1. Makes student accountable
  2. Less papers to organize
  3. Reduces stress
  4. Provides extra class time to support students individual needs
  5. Easy to use

    Is it possible for each child to have his or her own reading log (without others being able to see it)? I would like students to be able to keep track of their reading and AR progress, but I don’t want the other students to be able to see others’ information. Any information would be great. Thanks!

      Hi Stephanie,
      Thank you for this questions. Yes! You can have student’s see their own reading log. What you would do is make an individual Form for each student. To make it easier for you to access I’d link all the forms to one spreadsheet. Let me know if you need a tutorial on how to do this. I’d be happy to create one.

      Hello Stephanie,

      Sorry for the delayed response to your questions. If you want the students to have individual reading logs I’d use a Google Sheet. The other choice is to Make multiple copies of the Google Form. This way each student receives their own copy to review. Each Google Form can be linked to the same spreadsheet. This will provide you with a separate sheet for each student within one spreadsheet.

    I liked each student to have an individual one but I don’t want to have to click on them each individually to see them.

    Is there a way I can have individual logs and create one sheet with multiple tabs (that I’d name per student) of each of their logs?

      You could link the Google Form to a Spreadsheet.
      This means you would need to share a separate form with each student.

    I am looking to use this for my class to use for Accelerated Reader. Would I need to make 30 copies of the form and attach each one separately or is there an easier way?

    Hello Jennifer,

    It really depends on personal preference.
    I suggest adding a short answer question to the template with a request field for the students name. This could be linked to one spreadsheet where you may use an AZ Sort to alphabetize the data collected by students name.

    The other choice is to share individual forms (make a copy) with each student. Once the first form is linked to a Google Sheet this creates a spreadsheet for the other forms to be linked to. Using this method would create individual sheets to gather the input from each student. Please let me know if you need a tutorial. I’d be happy to create an updated post.

    DocAppender sheet aďd on will put individual responses onto an individual doc for each student. Students choose their name from a dropdown menu on the form which is assocuated with a drive folder containing each student’s doc record.
