Using Reminders to Support Student’s Organizational Skills

I have heard “Google Keep” referred to as one of the hidden G Suite Treasures. One of the the useful tools in Google Keep is the ability to set reminders. Reminders support students with remembering and internalizing important happenings throughout their busy day.

When a Google Keep reminder is set it appears as a reminder notification on both Google Keep and Google Calendar. On the date and time  for the reminder a pop-out window appears across synced devices alerting the user to check the Google Keep Note. Reminder alert students to check a Google Calendar or Keep Note for assignment “Due Dates” and important activities.

Backing Up Keep Notes it’s a Breeze…

Teachers and students who use Google Keep to maintain notes and organized to-do list do not have to worry about losing this information. Recently I had a user ask this question in the Google Docs Forum. The user wanted a way to backup a group of  Keep Notes easily on a regular basis. What I suggested was using the “Copy to Doc” tool as a work-around.  This allows the user to select all the notes in one label or on the opening page.

Directions for Backing Up Keep Notes

  • Open Google Keep
  • Click and Drag until all Notes are Selected

  • Click More More
  • Select Copy to Google Docs

  • Click Open Doc

NOTES:

  • This creates a Google Doc with all the list notes, Images, drawings and etc…
  • There are a variety of applications for using the Copy to Google Docs setting
  • This is not the only way to copy a Keep Note to a Doc

The above slide presentation was created for a workshop I’m facilitating about “Tips & Tricks for Supporting SPED Students” by using Google Tools. My day job is as a K-12 Special Education Teaching Assistant who has spent approximately two decades working with both elementary and middle school students. One of the biggest issues I’ve noticed across the board and throughout time is the limitation of organizational skills. In this digital age there are many tools which could be used to assist with organization. These tools when implemented as supports may help students quickly access the teacher’s lesson materials.

You might ask what does this mean to a student with physical, emotional or cognitive exceptionalities? Organization and quick access to information may be a game changer for some students. Over the decades I’ve noticed the “Stress” build on some student’s faces as they stumble locating lesson materials. This only sets them behind as they focus on finding the materials and unintentionally miss hearing or seeing the directions provided by teachers. It is my belief with the support of digital devices some of this stress may be eliminated for both the student and their teachers.

Using Chrome Navigation is only one of many Google Tools which may be used for supporting the student of exceptionalities. In an earlier post this year I shared about adding images to Google Calendar.  Visuals images assist some students with understanding information. Adding images such as Favicon’s without text to the Chrome Bookmark manager are less overwhelming then images with text. Of course it supports the student who has low reading skills. It also provides a cleaner look with less distraction supporting the students with focusing issues. Simple tips & trick which tend to be overlooked may eliminate stress for some students as well as the adults who support them. I hope you find the content in the slide deck to be helpful.

Insert Google Forms Chart into a Google Slide

Recently this question was asked in the Google Doc Help Forum, “Can I insert a Chart from Google Forms into a Google Slides Presentation?” I started thinking about this question realized both students and teachers could benefit from the below directions. Adding data to a student project or classroom presentation makes it more engaging to the audience.

There are several steps to follow for inserting a Google Forms Graph into a Google Slides Presentation. It isn’t hard to do and the benefits are well worth it!

How to Insert Google Forms Chart into a Google Slides

First please link the Google Forms to a Spreadsheet:
  1. Open a form in Google Forms.
  2. At the top, click RESPONSES.
  3. Below, click More More.
  4. Select Response Destination
  5. Choose Create New Spreadsheet
Next insert the type of chart you want from the data collected into the spreadsheet
  1. Open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Select the cells with data you want to include in your chart. Note: To make labels on your chart, add a header row or column to your data.
  3. Click Insert > Chart.
  4. In the “Recommendations” tab, choose a chart style. For more options, click Chart types.
  5. To edit your chart, click Customization.
  6. To create the chart, click Insert.
Or use the explore tool to drag a chart into the spreadsheet
  1. Open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Click the Column with Data
  3. Click Explore Lower right corner
  4. Drag the Chart to the Sheet
  5. Click the Chart’s Down arrow to Move to a new sheet in the spreadsheet

Last Step: Insert Chart into Google Slide Presentation

  1. Open a  Google Slides Presentation
  2. Select Layout choose blank
  3. Go to Insert and Select Chart
  4. Click from Sheets
  5. Choose Sheet and Click Select
  6. Select the Chart 
  7. Click Import

Smashing Extension Fab Timesavers!!!

While collaborating with a group of math teachers I discovered the “Power” of  “Smashing” these two Chrome Extensions. Chrome Save to Drive Extension does exactly what its name states. It allows the user to save screenshots and images from the Chrome Browser directly to Google Drive. The second extension is Awesome Screenshot which allows the user to capture and annotate snippets before saving as an image file. I find combining these two extensions can save a lot of time for both Teachers and Students when creating lessons and projects.
