Science Lab Support Using Google Slides

One day last week as I walked into study-hall a student shouted out, “Ms. Drasby You’re Awesome!” This was because the student successfully finished writing a science lab and didn’t have to do it for homework. Thanks to technology I was able to immediately share the information for the lab writeup completion with one of my teacher co-partners. The teacher used the question list I typed with onto a shared Google Doc. One of the advantages I like about Google APPS for Education platform (GAfE) its ability to share both synchronous and asynchronous information. This makes it possible to deliver pertinent details to support my students understanding and completion of assignments within a reasonable amount of time.

The other support provided to my students was the breaking down of directions and sharing the steps via a tablet on their desk.  This was done by using The Google Docs Presentation APP found in Google Drive. This provided the ability for the student to work independently as she wrote her science lab up on a blank looseleaf paper. The student was able to advance through the presentation one step at a time. This made it easier for the student to complete the tasks for the lab write up without an adult hovering over her.

         Shared the document after typing helped the students finish writing the conclusion before the school day ended.

What Google Drawings Page Setup Should I Use for Creating Interactives?

Google Drawing provides 3 standard sizes and a multitude of custom choices to pick from when choosing a page setup of an Interactive Manipulative.

  1. The standard 4:3 is equivalent to a width of 10 inches and a height of 7.5 inches.
  2. Widescreen 16:9 is equivalent to a width of 10 inches and a height of 5.625 inches
  3. Widescreen 16:10 is equivalent to a width of 10 inches and a height of 6.25 inches.
  4. When in custom view you have the four measurement forms of inches, centimeter, points or pixels to choice from.
    1. Inches are the standard unit of measurement used by Americans.
    2. Centimeters are the standard unit of measurement used by most countries.
    3. Points are a printers measurement term based upon typography measurements.
    4. Pixels are the resolution measurement term for photographs.
  5. Use the form of measurement your most familiar with when choosing page settings.

What to Consider When Choosing a Page setup

  • Are you going to be printing the Google Drawing or strictly using it as an interactive manipulative?
  • If printing it is easiest to stay within a standard size paper setting such as 8.5 inches by 11 inches or smaller.
    • Remember the only thing which prints is anything placed within the work area.

    • Choosing which size to use really depends on personal preference and if one is using the drawing to print or as an interactive manipulative.
    • At the beginning of this post is an example of a custom size interactive manipulative where anything laying outside of the work area will not print. However it is suitable for a learning interactive (hyperdoc) Manipulative.

Discovered Visual On-line Dictionary which Verbally Pronounces Words

It is amazing how excited I get when discovering new website links. Today I stumbled upon Merriam Webster’s Visual Dictionary On-line. This dictionary shares pictorial definitions along with a selection of vocabulary words for the content area in which the  vocabulary word is used. The other feature I really like is the student can click on a speaker to hear how to pronounce the words. This is a really great support and resource to share with the students. One thing I like most about this dictionary website is the way it differentiates the definitions to support all users! Websites like this are great resources to use because it supports the students with becoming an independent learner!
